Read Google Email Messages On Other Email Clients Using IMAP

You can read your messages from Google email in other mail clients, like “Microsoft Outlook” and Apple e-Mail, using IMAP. When you use IMAP, you can read your Google email messages on multiple devices, and emails are synced in real time

Set up IMAP

Step 1: Check that IMAP is turned on

  1. On your computer, open Google email.
  2. In the top right corner, click Settings .
  3. Click Settings.
  4. Click the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.
  5. In the "IMAP Access" section, click to select Enable IMAP.
  6. Now click Save Changes button.

Step 2: Change your IMAP settings in your email client

Troubleshoot problems

Step 1: Check your password

If you have these problems or can’t log-in, first check to make sure you’re using the right email account password.

Step 2: You can try these troubleshooting steps

  • Update your e-mail client to the latest version.
  • Use an App Password: If you use 2-Step Verification, try signing in with an App Password.
  • Allow less secure apps: If you don't use 2-Step Verification, you might need to allow less secure apps to access your Gmail account.
  • If you recently changed your Google email password, you might need to re-enter your Google email account information or completely repeat your Gmail account setup on your other email client.

How to check your Gmail settings

  1. Using a browser, open Gmail webpage and sign-in Gmail account.
  2. In the top right, click Settings (gear icon) tab.
